Spring Airlines, the Shanghai-based private budget airline, announced Sunday it is set to launch its first international route, from Shanghai to Japan, by the end of July, making it the first privately-owned Chinese airline to operate an international route.

Chinese online travel website company eLong Inc. reported its unaudited financial results for the fourth quarter and full year ended December 31, 2009.
Total revenues at eLong.com for the fourth quarter increased 18% year-on-year to CNY106.9 million and net revenues increased 18% year-on-year to CNY100.9 million. Operating income in the fourth quarter was CNY2.4 million compared to operating loss of CNY10.3 million in the prior year period. Net income in the fourth quarter was CNY1.0 million compared to net loss of CNY8.2 million in the prior year period.

After a 4 percent drop in 2009, travel bookings in China will grow by 5 percent in 2010, projects a new PhoCusWright report, “Emerging Online Travel Marketplace in China.”
The same report predicts that travel will expand to become a $65 billion industry by 2011, and that 20 percent of that market would be online.

Chinese Travel Search Engine Qunar Raises $15 Million

Lots of activity in China’s burgeoning online travel industry. Travel search engine Qunar has raised $15 million in funding in a round led by GGV Capital. Mayfield Fund, GSR Ventures, and Tenaya Capital also participated in the round, according to investment research firm JLM Pacific Epoch, which cites local media reports.

iPhone officially launched in China – what does it mean to marketing travel to Chinese consumers?

Apple’s iPhone finally arrived at market in China last Friday (October 30, 2009) and is evidently selling fairly well, despite wallet-emptying prices. ChinaNews.com found about 300 people queued up to buy the device at China Unicom’s flagship store in Beijing. That’s far fewer than you’d find at an Apple (AAPL) launch event in the U.S., but  the Chinese version of the iPhone is quite high, with prices ranging from 4,999 yuan ($730) and 6,999 yuan (about $1,025).

TripAdvisor (Daodao.com) buys Kuxun.cn

BEIJING -(Dow Jones)- Travel-review Website TripAdvisor said Friday it is buying Kuxun.cn, a Chinese flight and hotel search engine, as it taps into a burgeoning tourism market buoyed by China’s resilient economy.
TripAdvisor, owned by Expedia Inc. (EXPE), plans to invest more than US$50 million in China through late 2011, Chief Executive Stephen Kaufer told Dow Jones Newswires. The budget includes buying Kuxun, launching its own Chinese travel-review Web site, Daodao.com, in April, and hiring more staff.
