The outbound tourism sector in Guangdong province is enjoying a busy winter season but tourists may have to shorten their shopping lists due to tougher customs regulations.
Although the Christmas-New Year shopping bargains available in overseas destinations are still attracting Chinese tourists, holidaymakers will have to adjust to tighter limits imposed by customs this year.

To promote the “Beautiful Beijing and Charming Winter” initiative, the Beijing Tourism Administration (BTA) will give out 100,000 free entrance tickets for scenic spots to Hong Kong residents in order to encourage them to visit Beijing, according to the Hong Kong Association of China Travel Organizers, Ltd. (HACTO) on Nov. 30.

Recently China Tourism Academy and Ctrip.com jointly published the “2010 Ranking List of Chinese Outbound Tourism in Q3.” It is reported that the scale of Chinese outbound tourism has reached 15.42 million people in the third quarter and its growth rate has reached 23.5 percent. The Hong Kong Tourism Board has reported that the number of tourist arrivals in the SAR hit a record 16.86 million in the first half of 2010 — up 23.1% from the previous year.
The report adds that June, a total of 2.62 million tourists visited Hong Kong, up 43.5% year on year.

Visa and PATA Survey: Mainland Chinese most frequent outbound travelers from Greater China

The Visa and Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Asia Pacific Travel Intentions Survey 2010 has found mainland Chinese travelers plan to travel most out of all Greater China travelers.
The Survey, which was conducted in May 2010 and interviewed 1,571 people in the Greater China region, found that on average, mainland Chinese travelers are planning for 7.4 business and leisure trips in the next two years, compared with the 5.6 and 4.5 trips anticipated by Hong Kong and Taiwanese travelers.

The fall of the euro against the yuan has prompted more Chinese to travel to European countries, as they look to pick up luxury brands on the cheap.

The Hong Kong Tourism Commission and The HK Travel Industry Council have announced they will comprehensively supervise the region’s inbound travel services.
Philip WH YUNG, JP, Hong Kong’s Commissioner for Tourism, told local media that The Travel Industry Council has set up a special team to review various operational aspects of packaged tours from mainland China. Yung said that the SAR government will coordinate the process and work with the mainland’s tourism departments on the issue.
