The systematic blockade of American media giants Youtube, Facebook and Twitter is a major setback for international firms trying to access the Mainland Chinese markets – and for China-based organizations trying to get their message out of China. By blockading Chinese access to these sites, China is effectively creating 2 internets that don’t communicate freely with one another. The irony, however, is that the fracturing of the internet into 2 separate systems may benefit the American media giants and present them with new opportunities – both within China and abroad.

First some background:As reported by Reuters, and experienced by myself yesterday in sunny Beijing, the GFW (Great Fire Wall) strikes again. The Chinese Government censors blocked access to Twitter and other popular online services on Tuesday (June 2) afternoon at approximately 5pm, two days before the 20th anniversary of the crackdown on democracy protests in Tiananmen Square. The photo-sharing site Flickr, email service Hotmail and other services were also unavailable this evening. Blogger.com was blocked last month and YouTube has been inaccessible from the mainland since March.

MySpace China recently launched micro-blogging site 9911.com. It allows posting with each no more than 140 characters by 9911.com, mobile site, desktop software, MSN robot, and SMS.
